Howard Stevens (Football ’71-72), an elusive 5-5, 165-pound running back, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Missouri Valley Conference in 1972, gaining a school-record 1,429 yards rushing as a junior. That year he led UofL to 9-1 record and the Missouri Valley Championship while also earning third team All-America honors. He scored a school-record 102 points (15 touchdowns; 13 rushing, 3 receiving, 1 punt return) as a senior in 1972 while rushing for 1,294 yards.

Stevens played five seasons in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints (1973-74) and the Baltimore Colts (1975-77). He helped the Colts to three Eastern Division titles in his three years there as a running back and kick returner. Stevens resides in Cockeyville, Maryland and runs his own network marketing operation.
