Jim Bealmear was one of U of L’s greatest middle-distance runners. The 5-8, 135-pound Bealmear shattered school records in the half-mile, mile and two-mile events. He set and reestablished each of those marks in each of the four years he competed for Coach Clark Wood. His best event was the mile which he once ran in 4:06, a full six seconds faster than the current U of L record of 4:12 set in 1976. However, in the sixties, a person had to win the event to hold the record and Bealmear had finished a close second on his 4:06 pace.
