COLLEGE STATION, Texas- - The University of Louisville men's tennis team fell to host No. 19 Texas A&M 5-2 on Thursday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Cards (13-5) took the doubles point to start the match. The top-seeded team of David Simon and Viktor Maksimcuk defeated Wil Spencer Krajicek 8-5, while Austen Childs and James McArthur topped Matt Bain and Mike Beatty 8-4 at No. 3. Texas A&M's Chirs Chirico and Conor Pollock edged Simon Childs and Alejandro Calligari 8-7 (1) at the No. 2 seed.
"We played our best doubles match of the semester," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "All three doubles looked like they were going to win - they were up a break late in all the pro sets. Most impressive was No. 1 doubles with David Simon serving at 1-4. They had six times to break his serve to go up 5-1, once he held that serve, the next five games, got up 7-4 and served that match out. I was really pleased that this new doubles lineup clicked and executed very well today."
Calligari posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Kayvon Karimi at No. 6 to pull Louisville ahead 2-0.
The Aggies (9-5) took over the rest for the 5-2 win. Pollock, No. 23 in the ITA singles rankings topped No. 41 Austen Childs 7-6, 6-4 at the top seed. Krajiced defeated David Simon 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2. Chirico picked up a 6-4, 6-4 win over Simon Childs at No. 4. Bain beat Robert Rotaru 6-4, 6-0 at the five-spot.
Alejandro Calligari continues to be our hot player," said Ecarma. "He clinched Virginia Tech and - in dramatic fashion - Indiana. He was our lone win, but a dominating win at No. 6 singles. The rest of the team fought hard, but their ball tolerance was not enough. They needed to hit more balls and shots outdoors as opposed to indoors. Texas A&M is arguably one of the hardest places to win a road match. It was our first outdoor team event since October a little too much of a challenge for our singles play."
U of L (13-5) is back in action on March 26 in a doubleheader. The Cards will play Xavier at 1:00 p.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 5:30 p.m.
"Now we're going to go back to the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center and work on outdoor singles strategy and footwork," said Ecarma. "This team is good and has potential to be very good. Hopefully we can tap into that before the season ends.
