At the FINA Swimming World Championship in Rome, Louisville's Pedro Oliveira qualified 14th in the 200m butterfly with a time of 1:56.17 after the prelims and set a new national record for Portugal.
"He has positioned himself as one of the best 200 Butterfly swimmers in the world. This is the highest achievement for our program so far! Fantastic!," said an ecstatic Arthur Albiero, U of L head coach, who accompanied Oliveira to the competition.
Oliveira, who was an Olympian for Portugal in Beijing, will be swimming in the semifinals tonight as he fights for chance to get to the top-8 final.
