EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Andre Black and junior D'Ana McCarty did not waste anytime showing their athleticism and determination on day one at the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday in Eugene, Ore.

Black, a senior from Mobile, Ala., placed fourth overall in the men's triple jump. Black advanced out of the first flight and earned three more jumps. He obviously saved his best for last by increasing his distance by a little over a foot. On his last jump, Black leaped 53-04.25 (16.26m) which catapulted him five spots to finish fourth in the NCAA this season. For his finish, Black, the 2007 NCAA indoor triple jump champion, closes his career as a Cardinal as a five-time All-American.

McCarty, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind., advanced to the finals of the discus in her first outdoor championship meet. She finished ninth with a toss of 168-04 (51.30m) on her third attempt. McCarty, a two-time national champion in the indoor weight throw, is now a three-time All-American in her three-year career as a Cardinal. She will compete with teammates Jere' Summers and Lindsey Cook in the hammer throw Thursday at 3:00 P.M. (PST).

The last Cardinal competing on Wednesday was junior Matt Hughes. Hughes had the best time in the nation in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase heading into the NCAA Championships with a time of 8:34.87. Hughes advanced to the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase by winning his preliminary heat in a time of 8:43.08. The final will be at 6:00 P.M. (PST) on Friday, June 11.

The Cardinals will resume competition Thursday at 3:00 P.M. (PST) in the women's hammer throw.
