LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Senior Caitlin Collins scored her first career goal, but it wasn't enough as the No. 16 University of Louisville field hockey team fell 3-1 to visiting California Friday evening. The Cards (0-1) will take on No. 13 Michigan State Sunday at 6 p.m. while Cal (1-0) will play MSU Saturday at 6 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
"In the beginning of the game, I thought we started well and put them under a lot of pressure," said U of L head coach Justine Sowry. "To get that many corners and have that many shots on goal, we wanted a goal or two more than what we got. I give a lot of credit to California. They are a good team through the midfield and we had a lot of turnovers, so we have to fix that, but overall there were some positives. We need to get back to the drawing board and come out better on Sunday."
"Its good to get the chances, so far we have not earned that many penalty corners, so to earn that many is a positive. Now we have to execute because it is such a vital part of the game and we have to execute our set pieces. So, we need to improve that, but also make smarter decisions when we are tired. After the timeout we made some poor decisions and we have to pay attention to executing the plans."
The Bears struck at the 8:37 mark in the game when Rachelle Comeau's pass from the left side of the cage found Andrea Earle to give Cal a 1-0 lead.
Louisville answered four minutes later when Collins connected on a penalty corner assist from Elizabeth Vance to tied the game at 1-1.
The teams entered the break with the score knotted at 1-1, but with the Cards outshooting the Bears 14-2 and holding a 9-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Cal pulled ahead 2-1 in the first four minutes of the second half when Erin Magill connected on a penalty corner with assists from Deanna Kennedy and Lauren Spellman.
The Bears kept the advantage throughout the half, holding a 6-4 edge in shots. Cal struck again with just under two minutes remaining in the game when Earle notched her second goal on another penalty corner this time with assists coming from Kennedy and Shannon Elmitt.
The Cards were awarded two penalty corners as time expired, but could not capitalize and the game ended with the score 3-1. The Cards held a 6-4 edge in corners in the second half.
Maddie Hand (1-0) posted five stops for the Bears. In the game, Louisville outshot Cal 18-8 and carried a 15-4 advantage in corners. Junior Erin Conrad (0-1) had one save in the loss.
