Cross Country Faces Tough Challenge at the Commodore Classic

THE WEATHER Conditions are expected to be much cooler in Nashville on Saturday morning than they were for the first race on Aug. 29. The forecasted high for Saturday is 75 degrees.
After an impressive showing at the Flyer 5K two weeks ago, the University of Louisville cross-country team is ready to face a challenging field at the Commodore Classic on Saturday morning. The men's 8k event begins at 10:00 a.m. while the women's 5K event begins at 11:00 a.m. in Percy Warner Park.
The Cardinals had a great start to the season in Dayton, Edwin Kibichiy, Ernest Kibet and Japhet Kipkoech helped lead the Louisville men's cross country team to a first place finish. Benadate Cheruiyot and Kelsie Schwartz anchored the women's team to a second place finish.
Kibichiy, a junior out of Kapsabet, Kenya, led the men's race and finished in first place with a time of 15:35.1. Fellow junior Kibet finished in second place, just over four seconds after Kibichiy crossed the finish line. Junior Kipkoech finished in fourth place with a time of 15:49.8 to round out the Cardinals in the Top 10.
Along with the three finishers in the Top 10, the Louisville men's team had four runners finish in the Top 20, including freshmen Daniel Southard and Chris Striegel and sophomores Jonathan Reynolds and Thomas Cave.
Cheruiyot led the women's squad and finished second overall behind Ohio State's Katie Borches. Cheruiyot finished with a time of 18:31.0. Schwartz, a newcomer out of Grosse Point, Mich., completed her first career race in 18:55.1, which placed her in ninth overall. Sophomore Rachel Pease, freshman Bailey Davis and junior Leah Kiyohara also finished in the Top 20 for the Cardinals.
