Cardinals fall to Ball State on late goal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's soccer team fell 1-0 in overtime against Ball State on Friday night at Lynn Stadium. The Ball State Cardinals broke free of the stingy Louisville defense to score the game-winner with 2:42 remaining in the final overtime period. The Cardinals fall to 4-2-1 on the year while Ball State improves to 4-2-1.
"They were completely content with keeping numbers behind the ball and just sitting in and that's okay," said head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. "That's a strategy that sometimes we even use. I don't think it frustrated us but we couldn't solve it and the times that we did solve it their keeper was really good. The game was all about chances and moments, they didn't have many but they certainly took advantage there at the end. She is a very good player – she was very dominant in the air and scored a great goal. That one is definitely difficult to swallow."
The Cardinals offense tested Ball State early. Kaela Dickerman had a shot on goal in the ninth minute, Brooklynn Rivers had one two minutes later but Ball State's Alyssa Heintschell made both saves. Jill Vetere had two great chances in the first half but was unable to get them past Heintschell.
Ball State would get their only shot on goal in regulation when Sam Kambol dribbled to the left side of the net but Bucklin made the save in the 64th minute.
Vetere would get another chance in the 77th of the first half when she curled a shot to the top right corner, but Heintschel punched the ball over the net for the save, forcing the overtime period.
Louisville's best chance in the overtime period came off a free kick by Gabrielle Vincent in the 91st minute but Heintschel was there for the save. Rivers had another shot in the final second of overtime but it was collected, forcing the second overtime.
Vincent sent a shot wide to open the overtime period. Ball State's second shot on goal was the game-winner. Lorina White weaved her way past the Louisville defense with 2:42 remaining for the and slipped the ball past Bucklin for the win.
Louisville finished the game with a 23-4 shot advantage and a 7-3 corner kick advantage. Taylor Bucklin finished with one save while Heintschel finished with 11.
The Cardinals will be back in action this Sunday at 5:00 p.m. when they take on the Belmont Bruins at Lynn Stadium.
