Sophomore runner earns individual berth for next Saturday's race
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Following her fourth-place finish at Friday's Southeast Regional 6K race, sophomore Dorcas Wasike has qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 18 at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park.
Wasike earned All-Region honors at Panorama Farms, Va. with a time of 20:22.3, winning her a second-consecutive berth in the national finals. Wasike is the third Cardinal women's runner to qualify individually for the event. With a top-40 finish, she will earn the first All-American honor for a women's runner in program history.
As a team, the Cardinal women finished fifth in the overall team rankings, just missing out on a second-straight appearance at Nationals.
"While we are disappointed that our women's team was not able to earn its second trip to the NCAA Championships, we are excited that Dorcas has the opportunity to represent us next Saturday," said Louisville head coach Dale Cowper. "She has progressed greatly since the start of the season and should be in contention for All-American honors at Tom Sawyer Park."
Saturday's race will be the fourth run for Wasike at Sawyer Park, where she has improved her personal-best time each outing. Earlier in the season, she finished second in the ACC Championships and 11th at the Adidas Pre-National Invitational. In last year's NCAA run at Indiana State, Wasike turned in the Cardinal women's best time, placing 145th with a time of 21:01.9.
The women's 6K race will begin at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the men's race at 11:45 a.m. Live coverage of the race will be available with a subscription to FloTrack.
