Cardinals sweep individual titles at Tom Sawyer Park
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On their home course, the University of Louisville men's and women's cross country teams swept the individual championships at the 2018 Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday morning at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park. In the men's 8K, freshman Emmanuel Cheboson picked up his first career multi-team win with a time of 23:41.1. In the following women's 5K, junior Dorcas Wasike remained unbeaten on the season with a first-place time of 16:27.8.
"Absolutely outstanding performances today from Dorcas and Emmanuel to earn the individual titles," said head coach Dale Cowper. "As October approaches, both squads will need to elevate our focus and be ready to make the best of each opportunity. I'm excited about the growth each squad is showing and have great confidence that we'll be ready to step up in the championship segment of our season later this fall."
Cheboson stayed near the front of the pack for much of the 8K, finally pulling away in the home stretch for a three-second victory over Brennan Fields of Kentucky, posting a pace time of 4:45 per mile. Sophomore Albert Kosgei also placed in the top-10, finishing 10th with a time of 24:02.5. Senior Chandler Austin finished 15th at 24:11.6, while freshman Ryan Johnston and sophomore Cameron Stephens rounded out the Cardinals' scoring. In the overall tally, the Cards placed fourth with 155, as D-III North Central College (Ill.) took first with 102 points.
In the women's race, Wasike held in the top five for the first half before speeding past the field for her third consecutive victory, finishing 11 seconds ahead of Wofford's Hannah Steelman and setting a pace time of 5:17 per mile. With the final burst, Wasike nearly set the meet record, falling just a second behind the 16:26.70 posted by Michigan's Erin Finn in 2016. Freshman Ivine Chemutai continued her solid rookie campaign with Louisville's second-best time, finishing 25th with a mark of 17:36.5. The remainder of the Cards' scoring came from seniors Caroline Gosser and Abigail Wright, as well as junior Lauren Radenhausen. The Cards placed 11th in the overall tally, with No. 10 Michigan topping with 46 points.
The Cards will now turn their attention to the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 13 at the Zimmer Championship Course in Madison, Wisc. The team will be able to get a first taste of this year's NCAA Championship course, with Wasike looking to maintain her perfect record on the year.
