LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former University of Louisville and longtime NFL standout wide receiver Mark Clayton will be the newest addition to Louisville Football's honored jerseys as he will be recognized during Saturday's game against Stanford.
Clayton will be the 32nd former Cardinal to have his jersey honored, in addition to the retirement of Lamar Jackson's and Johnny Unitas' numbers.
The first member of the 2,000-yard receiving club at Louisville, Clayton starred for the Cards from 1979-82. He finished his four-year career with 96 receptions, 2,004 yards and 10 touchdowns.
He punctuated his standout career by earning Associated Press All-America honors as a senior in 1982 when he racked up over 1,100 yards and set the program record for yards per catch in a season. A big play threat every time he touched the ball, Clayton tallied four games with more than 150 yards receiving, tied for the most in school history.
Following his career at Louisville, Clayton was selected by the Miami Dolphins in the eighth round of the 1983 NFL Draft where he would become a favorite target of Dan Marino for the next decade.
Clayton played 11 years in the NFL, piling up nearly 9,000 career yards and 84 touchdowns. He was a five-time Pro Bowl selection, a second team All-Pro honoree in 1984, and twice led the league in touchdowns. Clayton helped the Dolphins to five playoff appearances under the great Don Shula, including Super Bowl XIX.
