The Cardinals outscored Chattanooga 56-35 in the first half
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville men's basketball began its season with an 84-70 late-night victory over the Chattanooga Mocs on Monday evening.
"We played really well in the first half and played very poorly in the second half, you credit to Coach [Dan] Earl and Chattanooga for that," said UofL head coach Pat Kelsey. "Always give credit to your opponent, and I always do that, they are very well coached. We were up 25 with a minute left in the first half and they outscored us by 11 from that point out, maybe more. Our offense, I have to watch the tape, but I feel like 1 for 16 from three and 9 for 18 from the line. Obviously, you are 15 feet away and the clock is stopped, and you're shooting a free throw, shoot 50%, obviously. We have to be better than that."
The Cards started off hot, jumping out to a 17-5 lead within the first four and a half minutes of the game. During the streak, Louisville missed its first shot but then made its next seven.
After Chattanooga cut the game to just 10 points at 14:00, Louisville used a 10-0 run from 11:35 to 9:43 to push its advantage back up to 23 points at 37-14. The Cardinals kept the Mocs at a 20-point-plus deficit for the majority of the half.
Chattanooga scored the final bucket of the half and fended off the Cardinals' final efforts around the rim, resulting in a Louisville lead of 56-35.
The 56 points were the most Louisville has scored in a half since scoring 62 in the second half against NC State on February 9, 2026.
The Cards shot 56.8% from the floor during the first half, firing a 41.1% clip from beyond the arc. Louisville also held Chattanooga to just one single offensive board in the entire first half.
Chattanooga slowly whittled away at the Louisville lead in the second half, using a 6-0 run and a separate 5-0 run to take its deficit down to just 15 points. Louisville led 80-65 with 3:47 to go in the game when the final media timeout of the half arrived. While the Cards ultimately won the game 84-70, the Mocs outscored them in the second half 35-28.
Junior forward Flory Bidunga led all scorers with 16 points on 6 of 9 shooting while also grabbing nine boards, four offensive and five defensive.
Junior guard Karter Knox was the leading rebounder on the floor with a career-high 11 boards. He tacked on nine points, two steals and one assist.
Chattanooga had two players with 14 points apiece: Yonatan Levy and Zach Bleshoy.
Louisville remains at home to play in-state foe Morehead State on Saturday at noon. The game will be streamed on ACCNX.
