Kirwa was named ACC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week for the second time this season, while Kipruto was named ACC Men’s Freshman of the Week.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – University of Louisville men's track & field sophomore Geoffrey Kirwa and freshman Elsingi Kipruto have both earned Atlantic Coast Conference weekly awards after posting a pair of record-breaking and NCAA-leading performances at the Bryan Clay Invitational, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Kirwa was named ACC Men's Track Athlete of the Week after racing to a 3000m steeplechase time of 8:08.10 on Thursday night, moving to the top of the world leaderboard for the 2026 season.
The time also ranks as the second-fastest in collegiate history, just under three seconds off the long-time NCAA record of 8:05.4 that was set by Washington State's Henry Rono in 1978.
The sophomore took roughly six seconds off his previous ACC record, program, and meet record time of 8:13.89 that he set at the 2025 Bryan Clay Invitational last April.
The honor marks the third time in his career Kirwa has been named ACC Men's Track Athlete of the Week and the second time this season after he raced to a program-record 5000m time of 13:21.49 at the Stanford Invitational on Apr. 3.
Kipruto was named ACC Men's Freshman of the Week after making his collegiate outdoor debut on Friday night in the men's 10000m, crossing the line in an NCAA-leading time of 27:29.83 that also moves him to No. 11 on the all-time collegiate list.
The time took nearly nine seconds off the previous ACC record of 27:38.54 that was set by Florida State's Adriaan Wildschutt in 2022, shaved 22 seconds off the previous meet record, and shattered the previous Louisville program record by 42 seconds.
Kipruto has now earned ACC Men's Freshman of the Week honors six times after winning the award twice during the cross country season and three times during the indoor season.
The Cardinals will be back in action this weekend for the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Invitational, their only home meet of the regular season, which will be staged over three days from Apr. 23-25 at Owsley B. Frazier Cardinal Park.
