OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville women's rowing team opened its spring season with three second-place finishes over the weekend. The races concluded the Cardinals' annual spring break training trip.
On Saturday, U of L picked up a pair of runner-up finishes in races against perennial powers Duke University and Ithaca College in Gainesville, Ga. In the Varsity 8+ race, the Cardinals finished the 2000-meter course in 7:36.38, just 10 seconds behind the Blue Devils and three seconds ahead of Ithaca. The Novice 8+ squad came in at 7:51.05 in its second-place finish, 18 seconds behind Duke.
The Cards traveled to Oak Ridge, Tenn., on Sunday to face a tough Minnesota squad and placed second in the Varsity 8+ race. The Cardinals finished in 6:43.25, only seven seconds behind the Golden Gophers. The Novice 8+ team placed third of three in its competition.
"We had a very successful spring break training week," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "The Varsity 8+ learned a great deal that will help us down the road. We raced well considering the short amount of time we have had on the water, and it was a positive experience to compete against these solid programs.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when the travel to Dayton, Ohio, to race against the Flyers.
