No. 10 Lacrosse Falls to No. 3 Northwestern as Rally Falls Just Short
March 29, 2015 | Women's Lacrosse
The No. 10 University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 12-10 to No. 4 Northwestern on Sunday afternoon in a rematch from last year's Sweet 16 contest between the two squads. Senior Faye Brust scored six goals on the day, but the Cardinals (8-3) were not able to overcome a second half deficit to defeat the Wildcats (6-3).
"I'm disappointed in our performance during the 7-1 Northwestern run," said UofL head coach Kellie Young. "We had a scout, we practiced the scout and too many players forgot to execute the scout. We have to decide that we are a top five team and play like it."
After Northwestern opened the game with a goal, Brust notched three consecutive scores within a span of less than two and a half minutes to give the Cards a 3-1 lead. Kaylin Morissette assisted Brust's second goal, while Heidi Smith assisted on the third.
Northwestern bounced back with six more goals to take a 7-3 lead before Cardinal Carissa Corbett cut the lead to three goals with 6:25 remaining in the half off of an assist by Brust. The Wildcats scored once again before the end of the half to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.
Ashley Peacock recorded three saves in the first half for Louisville, while Bridget Bianco finished the half with four saves for Northwestern. The Wildcats outshot the Cards 17-11 in the half, but the Cards led 9-4 in draw controls.
Brust scored her fourth goal of the game on a free position shot just over a minute into the second half, but Northwestern rebounded with two more goals to take a 10-5 lead. Morissette added a goal with 16:45 left to play before the Wildcats scored again to go up 11-6. Morissette added another score to bring the Cards to within four, but Northwestern rebounded with the eventual game-winner to take a 12-7 lead.
Louisville rallied in the last seven minutes of play, scoring three more goals. Hannah Koloski scored off a free position shot before Brust scored her fifth and sixth goals of the contest, one of which was assisted by Corbett. The rally wasn't enough, as the Wildcats would go on to win 12-10.
"Faye was outstanding today and dominated on the offensive end," said Young. "We showed great heart in battling back. That heart is what I expect from Louisville for 60 minutes."
The Cards finished with a 26-23 shot advantage after holding the Wildcats to just six shots in the second half. Peacock finished with four saves for Louisville, while Bianco finished with six saves and the win for Northwestern.
The Cards return to action on Tuesday, March 31 when they travel to Washington, D.C. to take on American at 2 p.m.
