Cody Cochran scores fourth career goal in the 35th minute
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The 14th ranked University of Louisville men's soccer team earned a draw in its season opener, as the Cardinals tied Cleveland State 2-2, Friday night (Aug. 30), at Dr. Mark & Cindy Lynn Stadium. The game was the first for UofL under head coach John Michael Hayden.
UofL opened the game with a pair of goals in the first half. The first goal of the game came on a Cleveland State own goal in the ninth minute. CSU's Hayden Parente headed the ball into the back of his own net after Cherif Dieye sent a cross into the box.
Cody Cochran scored his fourth career goal in the 35th minute, cleaning up a loose ball in front of the net off a free kick by Leonard Getz.
The Vikings scored both of their goals in the second half, coming in the 72nd and 83rd minutes.
The Cardinals had multiple opportunities in overtimes, accounting for seven shots between the two periods. Emil Elveroth and Haji Abdikadir each put a shot on goal late in the second overtime period, but were unable to find the back of the net.
In goal, Jake Gelnovatch recorded four saves, one in each period.
On the night, the Cards out-shot the Vikings 13-to-9, but shots-on-goal were tied 6-to-6. Louisville held a 59-41 advantage in possession over Cleveland State.
