Annabel Sep scores the lone goal of the game as Cards post their fifth shutout of the season
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 16-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated Stanford 1-0 in an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
Â
"Going into the season, we looked at this weekend with North Carolina on Friday and Stanford on Sunday, two very good teams, we knew it was going to be a tough weekend for us. We wanted to be a little more patient today, which is not really our forte and Stanford is a high possessing team as well, it may not have been a great spectating game, but I'm really proud of what we did on both sides of the ball."
Â
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in ACC play while Stanford drops to 7-4 (0-3).
Â
Senior Annabel Sep provided the only scoring in the game with assists from junior Addison Jay and sophomore Jaelen Perez. Senior goalkeeper Emily Young collected three saves as the Louisville's defense held Stanford scoreless for the first time this season.
Â
Overall, Louisville outshot Stanford 17-5 with a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal while the Cardinal held a 4-2 edge in penalty corners.
Â
Louisville held possession early in the first quarter, firing off seven shots with four of them stopped by Stanford goalkeeper Anya Jackson. The Cards held a 3-2 edge in shots and the teams were even with a penalty corner apiece in the second quarter, but neither team was able to find the back of the cage, entering halftime with the score knotted at 0-0.
Â
The Cards got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter after converting on their second penalty corner opportunity of the game. Jay inserted the ball and Perez provided the stop for Sep who rifled a shot into the cage for her fourth goal of the season.
Â
Stanford went on to earn two more corners in the fourth quarter, but Louisville's defense held the Cardinal at bay.
Â
"We were very, very patient and when they pressured, we were able to deal with it – it was fantastic," said Sowry. "They defended very well. I thought our opportunities were good opportunities, but they were very good defensively. I thought in the first quarter particularly, their goalkeeper was outstanding… On both sides of the ball, super happy to be honest. I told the team to get three ACC wins within four games, we feel pretty good about getting into the ACC tournament."
Â
Louisville will close out a three-game homestand on Tuesday when Bellarmine visits Trager Stadium for a 6 p.m. contest.
