Cardinals Lose Second Straight at Cal
April 18, 2026 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Louisville baseball team lost 6-5 on Saturday in the middle game of the weekend series at Cal.
Louisville (21-18, 6-11 ACC) has lost the first two games of the series and will try to salvage the weekend on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET.
For the second straight day, it was the Cardinals that got on the scoreboard first.
Lucas Moore singled leading off the second inning. He then proceeded to swipe second base and the catcher's attempt to get him ended up in the outfield resulting in Moore moving to third.
Jimmy Nugent followed with a dribbler out in front of the plate and Moore scampered home on the throw to first to retire Nugent.
After two scoreless to start the day, Ethan Eberle ran into trouble in the third. Cal (20-18, 6-11) plated three runs, all with two outs, to move in front for the first time.
Louisville responded two innings later though. Nugent led off the fifth with a solo homer before back-to-back singles from Ben Slanker and Kade Elam. Zach Davis bunted the pair up a base and Griffin Crain and Zion Rose cashed in the two runners to put the Cards back in front at 4-3.
The lead didn't last long however, as Cal got a two-run homer in its half of the fifth to seesaw back in front. The Bears then added another on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Louisville got a two-out RBI single from Zach Davis in the ninth to cut the deficit to one and put the tying run on base, but a groundout followed on the very next pitch to end the game.
Ethan Eberle (3-3) took the loss after allowing five runs over five innings. Peter Michael struck out four while giving up one run in his two innings out of the bullpen.
Nugent had the lone multi-hit game for the Cardinals, going 2-for-4 with his third home run. Moore stole his 25th base of the season in the loss, moving him into sole possession of second place on Louisville's all-time stolen base chart with 95 for his career.
