June 13, 2026 | Track & Field
Kirwa became the sixth outdoor national champion in program history as the men’s team posted their highest point total ever at the outdoor championship meet.
EUGENE, Ore. – Sophomore Geoffrey Kirwa won the NCAA title in the men's 3000m steeplechase on Friday as the University of Louisville men's track & field team posted a seventh-place team finish at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
The Louisville men concluded competition in Eugene with 32 points to place seventh in the team standings, recording their highest point total ever at the NCAA Outdoor Championships while matching the 2007 team for the program's top team finish.
Kirwa, the 2025 NCAA steeplechase runner-up as a freshman, climbed to the top of the national podium for the first time in his career, breaking the tape in 8:17.46 to become just the sixth outdoor national champion in program history and secure 10 points for the Louisville men.
The native of Kapsabet, Kenya, also joins Matt Hughes (2010, 2011) and Edwin Kibichiy (2017) as the only outdoor national champions on the men's side in Louisville history, all of which have come in the 3000m steeplechase.
The national title caps off a sophomore season that saw Kirwa continue to establish himself as one of the top steeplechasers in the world, notably improving on his own No. 2 steeplechase time in collegiate history with a time of 8:08.10 at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Apr. 16 that also currently ranks as the fifth-fastest time in the world in 2026.
After finishing as the NCAA runner-up in the 10000m on Wednesday, Elsingi Kipruto doubled back for a third-place showing in the men's 5000m on Friday, racing to a time of 13:42.58 to secure the bronze medal and close his sensational rookie campaign as a four-time All-American.
Kipruto's 14 points over the course of the meet stands as the highest point total for an individual athlete in program history, while the freshman also became the first Louisville male to earn a pair of First Team All-American honors in two individual events at the same NCAA Championships since Tone Belt in 2006.
Roman Kuleshov earned his second All-American nod of the meet, placing 10th in the men's triple jump with a mark of 16.05m (52-8) to garner Second Team All-American distinction after finishing 16th in the long jump on Wednesday. The senior closes his Louisville career as one of the best combo jumpers in program history, becoming the first Cardinal since 2008 to qualify for NCAAs in both the long jump and triple jump while also sweeping the ACC outdoor titles in both events this season.
Miller Jones also contested the triple jump in his first NCAA Championships at the Division I level, placing 18th with a mark of 15.81m (51-10.5) on his way to being tabbed Honorable Mention All-American.
The Louisville women will close out the 2026 outdoor season tomorrow with Alba Cuns Iglesias entered as the lone competitor for the Cardinals on Saturday. The redshirt junior will make her NCAA Championships debut in the women's triple jump at 8:10 p.m. ET.
