Women's Lacrosse Drops Decision to No. 13 Georgetown

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's lacrosse team climbed out of an early 4-0 hole, but the Cardinals were unable to maintain momentum, falling to 13th-ranked Georgetown, 19-11, on Saturday afternoon at the U of L Lacrosse Stadium in front of 358 fans.
"We need to be consistent with following the structure of our scout, and that will keep us in all of these games," head coach Kellie Young said. "Today, we were up and down with that. I'm definitely excited that we were able to get back to our style of play, and that's competing for 60 minutes."
The Hoyas (8-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) opened the game on a 4-0 run, courtesy of two goals from Dina Jackson and one each from Kristen Coleman and Meghan Farrell.
Louisville then went on a run of its own, scoring four unanswered goals. Casey Pepperman netted her 10th goal of the season to put the Cardinals on the board at the 22:59 mark. After Eleni Kozas cut the deficit to two less than a minute later, both teams struggled on offense and went scoreless for the next seven minutes. It wasn't until the 15:33 mark that Faye Brust found Jamie Redding, helping bring Louisville within one. Brust then scored the equalizer just a minute later, seemingly swinging momentum back in Louisville's favor.
Georgetown's Sophia Thomas, a 2011 All-American, broke the tie on an unassisted score and sparked a 5-1 run to close the half to lift the Hoyas to a 10-5 lead. Louisville's lone goal during the run came from Nikki Boltja inside five minutes to play.
"Lacrosse is a game of runs," Young added. "If you can be with that wave, you can always come back. Even when we were down by eight, I'm not rattled. I know we can come back. We had those opportunities and we didn't finish on our shooting. For us, mentally, to be down 4-0 and compete, shows that we're moving forward as a program and this group is learning what it means to compete."
The Hoyas picked up where they left off, opening the second period with four-straight scores.
Kozas and Boljta scored two goals for Louisville (3-8, 1-3) to halt the streak, but it was only temporary as Georgetown's outscored the Cardinals, 5-4, the remainder of the game.
Boltja finished the contest with four scores, giving her a conference-best 42 for the season. Redding and Kozas each netted a pair of scores, and Redding also earned an assist and had team highs in ground balls (3) and caused turnovers (2).
Pepperman won a game-high six draw controls, and Cat Gordon registered five to give Louisville the 19-13 overall edge in that category. Amy Poteet contributed solid minutes off the bench, collecting one ground ball, four draw controls and causing one turnover.
Ashley Herbst earned the starting nod in goal for the Cardinals and was credited with the loss. She and Danielle Pawliw each made six saves in the game.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday, April 13, at Rutgers. First draw at Yurcak Field in New Brunswick, N.J., is set for 5 p.m.
