The No. 12 University of Louisville lacrosse team fell 10-8 to No. 4 Duke in a tightly contested game on Saturday afternoon at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium. The Cards fall to 5-2 on the season and 0-2 in ACC play, while Duke stays perfect with a 9-0 overall record and 3-0 ACC record.
"The defense had one of their best days today in a set we haven't run in a while, so it was good to see them execute," said head coach Kellie Young. "We're still going to learn a lot from some of the goals that Duke had, but we made adjustments in the last game and executed those today. Ashley Peacock, despite a mistake in the end, had probably one of the highest number of saves in her career against a very good team. So I'm proud of that effort, we just need to clean up what we're doing because we have the potential to be a top five team and we just have to put the pieces together."
Duke opened the scoring when Taylor Trimble scored her first of four goals just 1:20 into the game off of an assist by Kerrin Maurer. Kaylin Morissette tied the score at 1-1 with 22:26 remaining in the half, but Maurer and Trimble each added a goal to put the Blue Devils up 3-1 with just under 16 minutes left in the half.
Cortnee Daley scored with 13:37 remaining and Hannah Koloski added another score less than a minute later to tie the game at three before Faye Brust put the Cards up 4-3 with just over nine minutes left in the half. Duke closed the half with two scores, one by Kyra Harney and another by Brigid Smith, to make the halftime score 5-4 in favor of the Blue Devils.
Duke finished the first half with a 14-13 shot advantage, while both teams recorded five draw controls. Peacock recorded five saves in goal for the Cards, while Kelsey Duryea finished the half with four saves for Duke.
Duke took a 6-4 lead when Maurer scored two minutes into the second half, but the Cards rebounded with three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead. Koloski started the scoring streak with an unassisted score with 27:19 remaining before Brust tied the game at six with a score assisted by Kelli Gerding. Daley put the Cards ahead with a free position goal with just under 24 minutes left to play.
The Blue Devils took a one-goal lead with 8:22 remaining in the game and kept possession most of the final minutes. Duke sealed the victory with a goal with less than one second left on the clock.
The Blue Devils held a 27-23 shot advantage in the game, while Louisville held a 10-9 advantage in draw controls. Peacock finished with a career-high 11 saves in the losing effort, while Duryea finished with seven saves.
The Cards return to action on Wednesday, March 18 when they host Vanderbilt at 1:00 p.m. at the UofL Lacrosse Stadium.
