Cardinals face ACC rivals at Clemson Invite
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville women's rowing team returns to competition this weekend as it heads south to the Clemson Invitational at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. In addition to the host school, Louisville will face off against fellow ACC members Duke, Virginia, Syracuse, as well as major national programs such as Wisconsin, USC and Oklahoma.
"This regatta has major NCAA implications. There are a lot of at-large contenders from different conferences competing this weekend," said head coach Derek Copeland. "It is important that all ACC teams do well because, in previous years, a lot of the teams selected for the NCAAs performed well at Clemson. We've performed decently in the past, but it hasn't been enough when it comes down to selection time. With the point structure changing this year, it will give everyone a better idea where they stand by the end of the weekend."
The regatta format has been adjusted from the one used in previous seasons. The seeds for Saturday's sessions were based on rankings created by the coaches to provide cross-regional racing. For each race on Saturday, the winning crew receives seven points, with each following team (2-7) receiving less (6, 5, 4, etc.). Following racing on Saturday, the crews are ranked by point totals, with the top seven point earners reaching the first level final of each level. The winning team of the invitational will be determined by the performances of the V8+, 2V8+ and V4+ crews on Sunday morning, using the NCAA point schedule. Additionally, an individual boat that exceeds expectations will receive the Breakout Boat trophy, as voted on by head coaches and a Twitter poll at @clemsoninvite.
Tentatively, the Cards will open action Saturday at 8:46 a.m. with the V8+ facing Boston University, Oregon State, Duke, Wisconsin, Indiana and Northeastern, followed by matchups against the same schools in the 2V8+ at 9:12 a.m. and V4+ at 9:38 a.m. The morning session will wrap up with the 2V4+ challenging Navy, UCF, Syracuse, Virginia, Tulsa and Clemson at 9:56 a.m.
In the afternoon, the 2V4+ crew starts at 5:26 p.m. against Clemson, Tulsa, Indiana, Virginia, Oklahoma and Northeastern. In the remaining races, the Cards will take on Clemson, Cornell, Minnesota, Wisconsin, USC and Tennessee in the V4+ at 5:52 p.m., 2V8+ at 6:18 p.m. and V8+ at 6:44 p.m. The Sunday morning championship session will begin at 8:30 a.m. and continue through the V8+ "A" final at 10:14 a.m.
The Cards will look to bounce back from their performance two weeks ago at the Pac-12 Challenge at Stanford. Facing some of the nation's top programs, the V4+ crew earned a victory over No. 12 USC in the final race of Saturday's session. The V4+ then turned in a faster time the following day in their race against No. 2 California.
Due to conditions on the Ohio River, the team has been unable to train on water, but Coach Copeland has been pleased with their performance inside the boathouse.
"We haven't had the opportunity to row on the water, however, the unintended benefit of training strictly on the ergs has been the mental and physical strength the team has been able to build," said coach Copeland. "We've seen every school record on the erg broken in the past week. Since it's not indoor competition, we will have to rely on the structures we put in place at the beginning of the year."
Live results will be posted on HereNow.com and on Twitter at @clemsoninvite. Check GoCards.com for a full recap of both days of competition.
