BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Rutgers' Sean Spicer twirled a complete game five-hitter, putting the shackles on the University of Louisville offense, as the Scarlet Knights ended the Cardinals run in the BIG EAST Championship with a 3-1 win Friday. Rutgers moves on to the championship game Saturday, while the Cardinals must wait until Monday to see if they receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals.
Dave Williams' RBI double in the fourth scored Todd Frazier and broke the scoreless tie, giving Rutgers a 1-0 lead.
Frank Meade's two-run triple to left center followed a walk and an error and put the Knights (40-19) on top 3-0.
Isaiah Howes provided all of the Cardinals' offense with one swing of the bat, drilling his record-setting fourth home run of the BIG EAST Championship, the first player in the history of the tournament to do so. The solo shot that opened the seventh was his 15th of the season.
Logan Johnson singled up the middle on the first pitch of the ninth, and the tying run came to the plate, but Daniel Burton lined into a tough-luck double play.
Spicer did not walk a batter and struck out three.
Cardinal starter James Belanger (1-4) pitched well but was on the losing end, allowing three runs, two of which were earned on three hits and three walks, striking out one in five innings.
Trystan Magnuson worked three scoreless innings, giving up three hits and striking out four.
Regional sites will be determined Sunday and the 64 teams that will advance to the NCAA Regionals will be announced on Monday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPN.
