Junior Natalia Baez had a break-out performance at the Rice Invitational in Houston when she upset the No.l seed and won the D-flight in the highly competitive tournament.
She beat top-seeded Abby Liu from the University of Texas in the first round 6-7,6-1,1-0 (10-6). In the second round, she beat Manami Karoda from Lamar 6-2,6-2. In the semi-final she won against Sara Pesic from UTA 4-6,6-1,6-1. And in the finals, she beat U of L teammate Jo-Ann Van Aerde 6-0,6-1.
