Cards Bow Out of ACC Championship

Louisville falls to Virginia Tech 4-2
CARY, N.C. -- The University of Louisville women's tennis team fell 4-2 to Virginia Tech at the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship on Tuesday morning at the Cary Tennis Park. Â

The Cardinals started the match by dropping the doubles point by the narrowest of margins. At the No. 1 slot, Berta Miret and Elena Noguero fell to Arina Gamretkaia and Özlem Uslu 6-2. The No. 2 pair of Alice Otis and Lika Peresypkina beat Tech's Mila Mulready and Linda Ziets-Segura 6-3 to knot the point at one court apiece.

The Cardinal duo of Germany Davis and Rebekkah Gaines battled Tech's  Elizaveta Castillo and Alston Myatt to the bitter end. UofL was up 6-2 in the tiebreak before dropping  four straight match points to tie at 6-6. The opponents fought through another three match points before the Cards ultimately fell 13-11.Â

Down 1-0, the Cards gave up the first singles point when Ziets-Segura won 6-3, 6-3 over  Rebekkah Gaines on Court 6. The Cardinals took a point back with a sweep on Court 3 as Elena Noguero defeated Hokie Mila Mulready  7-5, 6-4. VT scored the third point from Uslu 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in a three-set reverse sweep of Alice Otis.

But Louisville closed the gap in the match, taking Court 5 as Berta Miret won 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 Â over Myatt.
Gamretkaia clinched the match on Court 2 with tightly contested 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) win over a tenacious  Germany Davis.
