Women's Swimming Heads to SMU Classic
October 12, 2017 | Swimming & Diving
Unique format brings out hidden talents and is hallmark of Classic
After finishing just one point behind Michigan in 2016, the ninth-ranked University of Louisville women's swimming and diving team will look to reclaim their title at the 24th annual SMU Classic. Competition is slated to begin on Friday at the Westside Aquatic Center in Lewisville, Texas and will conclude on Saturday.
Â
Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:15 each evening, with competition beginning at 6:30 CT. In addition to Louisville, the SMU Mustangs will host No. 6 Michigan, No. 7 Southern California, No. 21 UCLA, and Miami. Of the six teams competing, Louisville recorded the highest finish at the 2017 NCAA Championships (6th), while USC (9th), Michigan (11th), and UCLA (20th) all finished inside the top-20. Michigan won last year's event, the Cardinals took second, followed by USC, UCLA, SMU, and Miami.
Â
The SMU Classic features eight swimmers and one diver from each participating team. Swimmers are permitted to race in three events per day, one of which must be a relay. Each team will enter one swimmer per heat (Consolation and Championship), while relays will only have a Championship heat. Diving events will consist of six optional dives on 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
Â
The nine Cardinals who will be competing at the SMU Classic will be announced later in the week, prior to the start of competition.
Â
Fans can follow live results at SMUMustangs.com, as well as on the Meet Mobile App. Diving results can be found at divemeets.com under "SMU Women's Classic."
