Cards fall 2-0 at Richmond
RICHMOND, Va. – The No. 18-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team fell 2-0 at Richmond Sunday afternoon.
Â
With the loss, the Cardinals drop to 10-7 on the season. Â
Â
"Disappointing day, however, credit to Richmond," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "We had a monumental lapse in the first 35 seconds with their best player. We had a lot of possession of the ball, however, Richmond defended well, and we were unable to generate quality opportunities in field play."
Â
Richmond (10-6) jumped on the scoreboard early when Clara Larripa, the NCAA Division I leading goal scorer, found the back of the cage just 34 seconds into the contest.
Â
Louisville struggled to generate its offense, delivering only one shot in the first 30 minutes of play as the Spiders took the 1-0 lead into halftime, outshooting Louisville 4-1 holding a 1-0 edge in penalty corners.
Â
After regrouping during the break, the Cardinals went on to earn three corners in the third quarter, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.Louisville continued to attack in the final frame, rattling off three shots in the first seven minutes before a penalty stroke by Larripa provided an insurance goal for the Spiders.
Â
Throughout the remainder of the game, the Cards earned three more corners and fired off four shots, but could not break through as Richmond prevailed 2-0.Â
Â
Overall, Louisville outshot Richmond 10-7 and held a 6-1 margin in penalty corners. Emily Young collected three saves for the Cards while Mairead Carey had two stops for the Spiders.
Â
"We had enough penalty corner opportunities, which we were unable to execute," said Sowry. "Full credit to our opponent, playing a solid game. I am sure we will learn a lot of lessons after watching video. We will have to regroup for our last ACC game and then tournament play."
Â
Louisville will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to face No. 10 Wake Forest in its regular season finale Friday at 5 p.m.
