Louisville closes the regular season with a 10-8 overall record and a 4-4 mark in ACC play, to earn the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament
Â
With the loss, Louisville drops to 10-8 on the season closes Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 4-4 mark. The Cardinals earn the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament and will face fourth-seeded Syracuse in the first round on Tuesday. The Demon Deacons (13-5, 6-2) secured the No. 2 seed.Â
Â
"Wake is an exceptional team with strength across all lines," said UofL head coach Justine Sowry. "I thought we played some of our best hockey, playing quicker and more direct than we had been. Unfortunately, we gave up too many corners to give ourselves a chance. They have a phenomenal penalty corner unit and it was a challenge to shut them down. We feel like we are in space playing well enough to do some damage in the ACC tournament."Â
Â
Annabel Sep scored the Cardinals' lone goal while Emily Young collected five saves. In the game, the Demon Deacons held an 11-4 edge in shots on goal and led in penalty corners by a 6-2 margin.
Â
The teams played through a scoreless first quarter with Wake Forest owning a 2-1 edge in shots on goal and each side awarded one penalty corner.
Â
The Demon Deacons broke through early in the second quarter when Mia Schoenbeck connected on a penalty corner goal.
Â
The Cardinals answered seven minutes later, capitalizing on a penalty corner of their own. Gracie Potter inserted the ball and Jaelen Perez provided the trap for Sep who fired a shot into the cage for her team-best sixth goal of the season.
Â
The scored remained knotted at 1-1 entering the break with Wake Forest holding a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal and the teams even with two penalty corners apiece through the first 30 minutes.
Â
The third quarter saw Wake Forest register three goals to take a 4-1 lead. Schoenbeck struck again in the opening minutes followed by a goal from Sarah Mudd midway through the frame. Janse Faye capped the third quarter scoring with just under four minutes left in the period. The Demon Deacons continued the momentum into the fourth quarter with a goal by Lena Keller.Â
Â
Louisville will face Syracuse in the first round of the ACC Tournament on November 3 at North Carolina's Karen Shelton Stadium.
