Louisville remains undefeated with a perfect 15-0 record against the Tigers.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The No. 3-ranked University of Louisville volleyball team extended its conference winning streak to 11 matches after sweeping Clemson (25-10, 25-13, 28-26) on Friday evening at L&N Federal Credit Union Arena.
Louisville (21-2, 11-0 ACC) continued to excel on the offensive side of the floor, totaling 46 kills with a .388 hitting percentage while serving up four aces. Defensively, the Cards held Clemson (8-15, 0-7 ACC) to just a .103 hitting percentage while tallying 50 digs and stuffing four blocks.
"It's a nice win at home," said Dan & Maria Durbin Head Coach Dan Meske. "Any win in the ACC is a great win. Obviously, we had a chance to play Blair [Thiebaud] tonight which was awesome. It was her second start of the season, first one at home, and I thought she played great. The first two sets, we were almost perfect, and then I thought the third set, our serving was sputtering at the beginning and obviously it was tight at the end, and I just thought the team was really composed and it was nice to close it out."
Outside hitter Chloe Chicoine led the charge with her third consecutive double-double, notching 14 kills, nine of which came in the third set, and 10 digs. The senior also posted a stellar .583 clip, her seventh match this season hitting at least .400. Outside hitter Chloe Meester also boosted UofL offensively, notching 10 kills with a .381 hitting percentage.
Setter Blair Thiebaud drew her second career start, dishing out 33 assists to facilitate Louisville's offense to a .388 hitting percentage. The freshman also secured six digs, put down three kills and stuffed a pair of blocks.
Libero Payton Petersen led UofL's defensive efforts with 13 digs, her 17th match surpassing the double-digit dig mark this season. Defensive specialist Hannah Kenny added 10 digs to help shut down the Tigers' offense.
SET 1
Clemson got the action started with the first two points of the set to help them gain a 4-3 lead early in the first. A kill by Kalyssa Blackshear ignited an 8-0 run to give Louisville a commanding 11-4 edge. The Tigers scored but UofL responded with another 9-1 run that saw four attacking errors by Clemson to extend its advantage to 20-6. The Tigers scratched back but the Cards maintained their lead to earn the 25-10 win. The Cardinals' offense posted an efficient .524 hitting percentage while their defense forced 10 errors as Clemson hit -.083 in the first.
SET 2
The squads played neck-and-neck through the first 12 points of the second with the score tied at 6 apiece. The Cards powered a quick 5-1 run that was capped by back-to-back kills by Meester to claim the 11-7 lead. Clemson rattled off three straight, but UofL answered with another 6-1 run to distance itself at 17-11. The Tigers scored two of the next three, but the Cards scored the last seven of the set to secure the 25-13 win. Louisville's offense excelled once again with 15 kills on a .433 hitting percentage while serving up three aces in the second.
SET 3
Meester opened the third with a kill to get UofL on the board first, but Clemson scored three of the next four to gain the slight 2-1 edge. Louisville tied up the set at 3 apiece before the Tigers went on an 8-4 run to create separation at 11-7. The back-and-forth affair continued to the media timeout as Clemson maintained its advantage at 15-12. The Cards scored three of the next four out of the break to come within one at 16-15, forcing a Clemson timeout. The Tigers scored a pair after the timeout, but the Cards shot back with a quick 4-1 run capped by an ace by Kamden Schrand to tie up the set at 19. The teams traded swings the next six points with the score even at 22, but a block by Clemson gave the Tigers the one-point lead to force a Louisville timeout. A kill by Thiebaud tied up the set at 23 but a Clemson kill earned the Tigers set point and caused another UofL timeout. The battle continued to extra points, but a Chicoine kill and a block by freshman Elli Strecker secured Louisville the hard-fought 28-26 win.
